16x9 Cinema: IGUS DryLin DIY Video Slider for HDSLR Filmakers

16x9cinema.com In this short video blog post, I share a little more information about the Igus DryLin rails system modified to use as a video camera slider. Several weeks ago I posted an unboxing video on YouTube of three different Igus DryLin rail systems for making an inexpensive slider for your camcorder or HDSLR. I took the rail system to a local machinist and had him tap in a mounting hole in each rail so I could attach the rails to a tripod. I also had a mounting plate added with a 3 inch bolt to allow mounting a video head to the rail. The ends of the rails were tapped and a bolt and washer added to prevent the cradle from sliding off the rails. This iPhone 4 video (don't expect high production values here) shows the end results. I just want to quickly show you my newly machined Igus sliders. You will see a couple of sample clips I took with the Canon 5D Mark II mounted to the Igus DryLin W16-A rail system. I mounted a Nikkor 55mm macro lenses to the Canon 5D Mark II. Bottom line: These are clearly a great option for the budget conscious filmmaker.

Konova DSLR Slider Review

www.learningdslrvideo.com Before I start in on the review I want to tell you about my little DIY dolly because before I had it I thought it would be the answer to all my slider needs. Well it wasn't and I don't use it that often, there are two reasons, speed of setup and smooth surfaces. For me I like to move fast from slider move to slider move and using the dolly on a large long board is just not what I call fast for set up time. Also a board does not work well on a board unless it is really smooth, this works best on glass or like a Formica counter top. I tell you this because the Konova slider is much faster to setup, especially in many different configurations. Over the past couple of years a lot of sliders made for DSLR's have come out and a lot of them are really expensive and out of the reach of many amateurs. Basically there are two types of sliders, the less expensive friction sliders that use something smooth like Teflon, and the more expensive roller bearing type that can be very expensive. That is where this Konova slider is different, it has roller bearings and it is around the same price as the friction based sliders.
